MV Magellan Explorer features 50 passenger suites and cabins in five categories of accommodation, including dedicated single cabins. The cabins are very spacious, ranging in size from 40 m2 (440 sq. ft.) to 20 m2 (220 sq. ft.). All double cabins have two twin beds that can be configured as one queen-size bed, offering great flexibility to our guests. 42 cabins feature a large window and a private balcony, while 8 cabins feature a porthole. All cabins feature a private bathroom and a sitting area.
Public areas include a large, forward-facing observation lounge, an observation deck, a dining room that accommodates all guests and expedition staff in a single sitting, two meeting rooms, a gift shop, a protected outdoor barbecue area, a gym, and a sauna. The bow of the ship is accessible to guests to offer expansive views during exploration. Optional adventure activities, such as kayaking and snowshoeing, are available.
Specific measures have been taken to minimize MV Magellan Explorer’s carbon footprint, including state-of-the-art engines that meet MARPOL’s stringent Tier III emission standards. To minimize fuel consumption, a waste heat recovery system recycles the heat produced by the ship’s engines and repurposes it to power the ship’s heating system and to warm the water used on board.
Day 1 / Port Stanley, embarkation:
Pick up at the airport in Port Stanley, town visit,and embarkation.
Day 2 / Saunders Island, Carcass Island:
During a morning visit to Saunders Island, weenjoy the long white-sand beach. A wildernessexperience, the main attractions there arerockhopper penguins, nesting black browedalbatross, and sub-Antarctic gentoo penguins. Inthe afternoon, we visit Carcass Island. There isan option for an easy hike to the settlement, birdwatching, and a typical Falklands tea experience.
Day 3 / Bleaker Island:
Morning landing at Bleaker Island. This is anatural reserve with a famous bird area featuring alarge variety of birds. In the afternoon, we head toSouth Georgia.
Day 4-5 / At Sea:
Day 6 / Elsehul Bay:
Evening Zodiac cruise at Elsehul Bay, subjectto crossing and permits from the SouthGeorgia government.
Day 7 / Grytviken, Fortuna Bay / Stromness:
Morning landing at Grytviken, we will clearCustoms here and then visit the historical site, withthe museum and Ernest Shackleton’s grave. In theafternoon, landing at Fortuna Bay / Stromness.We will see king penguins and learn more aboutShackleton and his expedition. There is an optional2-3 hour “Shackleton walk”.
Day 8 / Salisbury Plain, Prion Island:
Morning visit to Salisbury Plain for more kingpenguins and stunning landscapes. In the afternoon, visit Prion Island to see the nestingwandering albatross.
Day 9 / St Andrews Bay, Cooper Bay:
Morning visit to St AndrewsBay. We will see the largest kingpenguin colony, and elephantseal bulls. In the afternoon, visitCooper Bay to see macaronipenguins on a Zodiac cruise.
Day 10-11 / At Sea:
Day 12 / Elephant Island:
In the afternoon, we will seeElephant Island. While a landinghere is very unlikely, we will see the island from theship or, if sea conditions allow, from a Zodiac.
Day 13-16 / Antarctic Peninsula, South Shetland Islands:
Cruise along the Antarctic Peninsula and among theSouth Shetland Islands, visiting sites in the AntarcticSound and in the Gerlache Strait. The voyage mayinclude visits to sites such as Gourdin Island, BrownBluff, Half Moon Island, Deception Island, WilhelminaBay, the Lemaire Channel, Cuverville Island, theMelchior Islands or other magnificent places.
